Even as the world becomes smaller and more interconnected,
people from around the globe still seek the boundless opportunities available
in the United States. In new reports, the Profiles Series is looking at what
committed teachers are doing to help new immigrants become part of the American
community.
Every year, millions of people flock to the US to start a
new life with freedoms and opportunities they may not have enjoyed in their
native countries. Many of them face an uphill battle though without the
communication skills to be a part of the American experience. Learning the
English language is an important milestone for many people joining the US population.
English as a second language or ESL has become an
opportunity for many community organizations to welcome new immigrants to
America. Through programs in libraries, schools and community centers people
are learning the English language skills to be productive in our society.
To teach ESL in schools, educators need special
certification and usually need advanced training in linguistics. However,
people can volunteer to teach classes and qualify by obtaining a TESL or
Teaching English as Second Language certification.
The certification can be received online as well as a class
at many community colleges. Participants say that teaching English to new
immigrants requires patience, and some of the most productive work is done in
groups.
The TV program also found that radio networks are coming
together to allow immigrants to learn the language without a classroom. Via a
broadcast, new arrivals can learn some of the basics of the language so that
they have enough of a grasp to communicate on a very basic level.
