Profiles Series Reporting on Healthcare Advances

Our healthcare system is constantly innovating to better serve patients. In research settings and in hospitals around the country, strides are being made that are greatly enhancing patients care.
On the Profiles Series, audiences can see the latest in this fast-changing field.

New innovations in laboratories and in research hospitals around the country are giving doctors new tools in the fight against illness and disease. Many new medications are now being crafted from new knowledge about disease that is being gleaned from the molecular level, where scientists are learning about the very building blocks of disease.

For surgeons in the operating room, new tools are helping them improve prognoses for patients after surgery while also reducing recovery time. New less invasive procedures mean that doctors now can avoid damaging healthy tissue around the surgical site. This means that patients can expect fewer complications and a shorter road to recovery.

Patient records are vital to quality care, and healthcare professionals are seeing changes in the institutional side of the medical field that are changing how they keep vital records. Electronic medical records are allowing them to store vast volumes of information online, where it can be accessed from anywhere and quickly updated. It is adding convenience for both the patient and the health care provider by eliminating bulky paper records.

Executive Producer Walter Waiters, senior associate producer Joel Walters, associate producers Ryan Chadderton, Rachel Van Drake, Randi Gardner, Scott Kuntz, and Ralph Gonzalez are working on these new healthcare reports.

The Profiles Series TV show will explore innovations in healthcare in upcoming reports. Check local listings.

Profiles Series Reports on English Instruction for New Immigrants

Even as the world becomes smaller and more interconnected, people from around the globe still seek the boundless opportunities available in the United States. In new reports, the Profiles Series is looking at what committed teachers are doing to help new immigrants become part of the American community.

Every year, millions of people flock to the US to start a new life with freedoms and opportunities they may not have enjoyed in their native countries. Many of them face an uphill battle though without the communication skills to be a part of the American experience. Learning the English language is an important milestone for many people joining the US population.

English as a second language or ESL has become an opportunity for many community organizations to welcome new immigrants to America. Through programs in libraries, schools and community centers people are learning the English language skills to be productive in our society.

To teach ESL in schools, educators need special certification and usually need advanced training in linguistics. However, people can volunteer to teach classes and qualify by obtaining a TESL or Teaching English as Second Language certification.

The certification can be received online as well as a class at many community colleges. Participants say that teaching English to new immigrants requires patience, and some of the most productive work is done in groups.

The TV program also found that radio networks are coming together to allow immigrants to learn the language without a classroom. Via a broadcast, new arrivals can learn some of the basics of the language so that they have enough of a grasp to communicate on a very basic level.
